Four Questions

Neighborhood Pharmacist

Print Richard Smith

It's no wonder that Richard Smith received the Wyeth Bowl of Hygeia Award, for a pharmacist who has shown community leadership and devotion to his profession, at the Georgia Pharmacy Association convention this summer. A member of one of the founding families and a former president of Congregation Etz Chaim in East Cobb, Smith has also owned and operated the Sandy Springs Pharmacy since 1971, as well as E-Z Med Pharmacy, the only two independent drugstores in the area. Smith answers Julep's Four Questions.

1. What book, movie, TV show or other medium are you dying to share and why?

I am now reading a book written by a good friend from the morning minyan at Congregation Etz Chaim. His name is Stephen Krodman, and the book he wrote is Shorts in a Wad. The book has a hundred 100-word stories.ÊThey are humorous and also have a point.

2. If you could have brunch with a biblical or historical Jewish figure, who would it be?

I would like to have brunch with Ariel Sharon. I have read his biography, and he has so much dedication, loyalty and morality. He was a strong leader with conviction. He was a fighter for that in which he believed. His love for Israel never swayed. I am sure that the tales he could tell would keep me spellbound.

3. What is your favorite Jewish food?Ê

I enjoy all Jewish foods, but most especially a good lox, cream cheese and bagel! I enjoy Jewish holidays that bring special foods to the table.

4. Nu? (So?)Ê

I grew up in Vidalia (sweet onion country). My family instilled in me a love of Judaism, a work ethic and a love of family. After 40 years in pharmacy, I still get great pleasure from assisting people with their medical, pharmacy and equipment needs. Taking care of my patients for the many years I have been at Sandy Springs Pharmacy has been a delight and not a chore. You know the saying "If you enjoy your job, you do not work a day in your life." After the children left home and the dog died, my wife, Sandy, began working in the pharmacy with me. We are still talking and even enjoying life more as we are together most of the day. We are very lucky to have a loving family and a handsome 2-year-old grandson, Sammy.
