The Art of Fashion
NIKKI SALK relocated to Atlanta from Chicago to open Addiction, a Buckhead boutique featuring designer fashions and accessories. Shoppers will also find vintage furniture, which Salk refinished and painted, on sale in the store. Addiction celebrated its grand opening in March and is located at 414 E. Paces Ferry Road. For information, call (678) 927-9383 or visit www.shop-addiction.com. Salk answers Julep's Four Questions.
1. What book, movie, TV show or other medium are you dying to share and why?
I know everyone has seen the movies and probably read the books by now, but I will always love the Lord of the Rings books by J.R.R. Tolkien. The language is beautiful, with each sentence or paragraph acting as a remarkable piece of written art. And the story line is so amazing. The simple bottom line is to stick to your guns and to never back down.
2. If you could have brunch with one biblical or historical Jewish figure, who would it be and why?
I was always intrigued by the Book of Job and always held it as my favorite. I would love to spend time with Job, as he is a person from whom one can learn great things. Most importantly, to always stand up for what you truly believe is right and true and just. No matter the sacrifices you may be forced to make, it is always important to be honorable.
3. What is your favorite Jewish food?
Hamantashen!
4. Nu? (So?)
I opened Addiction because I wanted to excite people about the art of fashion. Too often it is assumed that looks and fashion should not be so important as they are made out to be. But that would be to then say that art or dance or literature or any other form of expression is not important. Fashion is amazing because so many people are involved in the art of it. There is first the designer. He or she is inspired by a book or a bird or the way the clouds form in the sky. This inspiration, in turn, becomes a beautiful dress. Someone sees the dress going down the runway or in a store window and they immediately feel something for it. They feel the beauty in the piece that the designer hoped them to appreciate. Every time this person wears this dress, she feels her own sense of beauty. And everyone who sees her in it can feel that radiating from her. It is very exponential, the effects of fashion on others. And not just through the eyes, but through the heart.
